moong dal gotsu served with idlis

Looking for an easy side dish for idli/ dosa that has the goodness of lentils and is super simple to make? Then look no further. This moong dal Gotsu recipe is something I grew up eating as a child and is one of my absolute favorite dals. The Gotsu / dal is so versatile, you can have it with idlis, dosa or even with rice. Add some garam masala instead of sambar powder and you have a comforting side dish for rotis.

Moong dal gotsu with idli and chutney

I make this recipe atleast once a week and my little one loves it as well. (Although for her, I have to removethe coriander leaves and curry leaves and reduce the amount of chillies in the dish. ) I prefer cooking my dals in my regular pressure cooker as I feel they are much faster. But this can be easily done in the IP as well. Since moong dal cooks fast, it doesnt matter if you use electric or traditional prrssure cooker. I have shared both the recipes for you here.

The reason I love this recipe. It is

  • vegan
  • comforting
  • uses ingredients you have at home all the time
  • delicious
  • super easy to prepare
  • and goes well with a lot of dishes

  • 2 big tomatoes chopped
  • 1/3 cup moong dal / pasiparuppu
  • 1 tsp sambar powder
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida
  • 2 slit green chillies
  • 11/2 tsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  • 1-1/2 cups water
  • salt to taste
  • 1 small potato / or 2 to 3 brinjals chopped (optional)
Instructions
Pressure cooker method:
  1. Add oil to your pressure cooker and when it gets hot, add the mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, turmeric powder, green chillies, asafoetida and let the mustard seeds splutter.

  2. Now add the chopped onions and saute until the onions turns translucent.

  3. Then add the chopped tomatoes and saute untul they turn a bit mushy. Add the sambar powder, salt to this and saute for a couple of minutes. (Add the potatoes or brinjal if adding at this stage)

  4. Now add the water, moong dal, chopped coriander leaves and cook for 4 whistles in medium flame. Open when the pressure settles down and serve hot with idlis and dosa.

Instant pot method:
  1. Switch on the saute mode in your IP and add the oil. When it becomes hot, temper it with mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chillies, urad dal, asafoetida and turmeric powder.

  2. When the mustard splutters, add the onions and saute for couple of minutes or until the onions turn translucent.

  3. Now add the chopped tomatoes, sambar powder, salt and saute for 2 to 3 minutes. (Add the potatoes or brinjal if adding at this stage and saute for a minute)

  4. Add the moong dal, water, coriander leaves and switch off the saute mode. Cook in manual high for 15 minutes and release pressure naturally.

  5. Serve hot with idlis/ dosa or rice.

Recipe Notes

* Can substitite sambar powder with  1 tsp coriander jeera powder and 1/2 tsp or less chilly powder.

*Highly recommend using moong dal. But it can be made with masoor or toor dal as well.

  1. Instant pot Ven pongal - Cooking with Pree says:
    April 28, 2019 at 5:15 pm

[…] This instant pot ven pongal is one of the dishes I inaugurated my instant pot with. This easy and simple recipe is a staple dish for most south Indians. It is the south Indian equivalent of a risotto, but here we have both rice and moon dal instead of just rice. Commonly had for breakfast, ven pongal is a comfort food for many. It is one of my favorite dishes and I love to have this with loads and loads of sambar or gotsu! […]
