Here’s an interesting gadget for your kitchen. If you are familiar with air fryers, this Mealthy crisplid does exactly the same thing but you use this along with your electric pressure cookers and it is much more compact.

What is an air fryer?

It is exactly what the name suggests. It is a kitchen appliance that lets you fry things, but without as much oil as in the traditional method. Instead, it uses hot air to fry up things. So it is considerably healthy than frying using tons of oil. The airfryer doesn’t eliminate oil completely. But you would not have to use as much oil as you would normally do.

How is this Mealthy crispLid different from a traditional airfryer?

I don’t own an airfryer. This is my first one. So while I cannot do an exact comparison between the two, I can tell you the basic differences.

A traditional air fryer is a separate kitchen appliance whereas, the Mealthy CrispLid works on top of your 6 or 8 Qt Electric cooker (like instant pot or mealthy multipot) It is a lid, that you fix on top of your electric cooker.

Imagine this, you finish cooking / steaming potatoes in your electric cooker. Now all you have to do is crisp them up. Now you can do that by either frying them in oil, baking them or crisping them up in an airfryer. If you want to crisp them in your air fryer, all you do is, fix this CrsipLid on your electric cooker that you used to cook your potatoes and air fry them until nice and crispy. Get the picture?

How do you airfry using this CrispLid?

  • The Mealthy CrispLid is compatible with 6 or 8 qt Electric cooker like an Instant pot or Mealthy multi pot.
  • The CrispLid consists of a glass lid that has the main housing unit which consists of the handle, control panel to control temperature, time etc, heating element, and fan.
  • This glass lid is fitted on top of your 6 or 8-quart electric cooker.
  • The crispLid comes with a trivet and airfrying basket
  • The trivet is placed in the bottom of your empty pressure cooker(ie the inner stainless steel pot) and the airfryer basket is placed on top of the trivet.
  • Now you will place the food that you want airfried on the airfryer basket, close the inner pot of your pressure cooker with the CrispLid, set the time, temperature and start cooking.
  • Alternatively, you can also place the food directly on the inner stainless steel pot of your electric cooker, close it with the crisp Lid and proceed with the cooking.

What are the accessories that you get along with the Crisp Lid?

  • TRIVET – You get a 3″ raised trivet. It is a stand of sorts for you to keep the airfryer basket
  • AIR FRYER BAKSET – A stainless steel mesh basket to hold the food you want to air fry.
  • TONGS – Stainless steel tongs to flip hot food or take the basket out when done cooking.
  • SILICONE MAT / TRIVET – When you are done airfrying, the Lid is going to be pretty hot. So the Silicone mat/ trivet is provided so you can place the crispLid on top of it, until it cools down.

It is to be noted that the Trivet, basket, silicone mat, tongs are all dishwasher safe.

Do all airfryer recipes work with the Crsiplid?

Yes, all airfryer recipes work with the CrispLid. If you find any blog/ article featuring airfryer recipes, you can definitely use that with the crispLid. Things you can do with the crispLid include but are not limited to-

  • Roast / fry vegetables or meat
  • Fry patties / vadas, pakoras etc
  • Make crispy chickpeas, crispy veggie chips etc

My first CrispLid recipe- Fried Idlis

My first recipe with the CrispLid was Crispy fried Idlis. Crispy idlis is one of my daughter’s favorite things to eat. Traditionally I would use a lot of oil, a cast iron pan to crisp up the idlis. I decided to try the same using the Crisplid.

So here’s what I did – I steamed the idlis in my Instant pot, drained the water from the inner lid and removed the idli pans. I let them cool for a bit. Then I cut them in bite sized strips and coated them in about a tsp of oil. I then placed the cut idlis on the frying basket, which was placed on top of the trivet in the inner pot of my Instant pot. I set the timer for 15 minutes at 400 degrees. When done, I turned the idlis to the other side and cooked for another 5 minutes and voila they were done.

What I liked and did not like about the Mealthy CrispLid – Pros–

  • Compact – The crisp Lid is more compact than a traditional airfryer.
  • Comes with all the accessories – You get all the accessories mentioned above for the price you pay.
  • Lightweight – They are not all that heavy, making it easy for you to handle it often.
  • Dishwasher safe – the Trivet, basket, silicone mat, tongs are all dishwasher safe. The glass lid can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
  • Budget – It is not all that expensive when compared to the traditional airfryers. The Lid is currently 50$ and that includes all the accesories that comes with it.
  • Faster then baking – No need to pre heat etc. Things get baked / broiled faster than an oven.

What I liked and did not like about the Mealthy CrispLid – Cons–

  • Capacity – You cant fit in a lot of food in the trivet. If you need more things airfried you will have to do it in batches. I was able to fry about 6 to 7 big idlis cut in strips in one go.
  • Handling – Not a big con, but you will have to be a little careful not to place the hot lid anywhere else but the silicon mat until it cools down. Also you have to careful not to touch the inner pot while flipping food. The tongs do help you, but you have to make sure you do not accidentaly come in contact with the innerpot or the glass part of the lid.

What do you think? I think they are a great addition to your kitchen, especially if you have an Instant pot or any other electric cooker. It does not take up a lot of space and it is budget friendly as well. If you already own an airfryer, then there is no point in buying the crisp lid.

You can Buy the Crisp Lid using my exclusive Referral link.

If you don’t own an electric cooker, but wish to buy one, check out Mealthy’s own line of pressure cookers – Mealthy multipot. I have heard great reviews from my friends and fellow bloggers that they are as good as an Instant pot and budget friendly too, especially for people in India.
