Pongal is a Tamil festival celebrated in the tamil month “thai”. It is usually ceberated to rejoice the harvest in that particular month. The harvest would usually be crops like rice, sugarcane, turmeric, lentils etc. Pongal in tamil means boiling over. On this day, rice is cooked in a pot and when it boils and overflows, people shout ” Pongal ‘O Pongal”
Traditional dishes like Ven pongal , chakkarai pongal (sweet pongal) and vegetable sambars / gostu are usually prepared on the day of thai pongal and on the fourth day of kaanum pongal variety rices like lemon rice, tamarind rice, coconut rice are prepared by the women in the families as offrings to their brothers.
